В 1653 году Патриарх Никон провёл ряд широких реформ в Русской Православной Церкви, касающихся изменений в обрядах церковной службы и приводящих её в соответствие с обрядами греческой православной церкви. Эти реформы вызвали раскол в русской церкви. In 1653 Patriach Nikon instituted broad reforms within the Russian Orthodox Church dealing with changes in the ritual, making it consistent with the Greek Orthodox church. This reform led to the split of the Russian chuch that is known as raskol. Those who did not support the Russian church reform of Patriach Nikon in 1653 were referred to as старове´рцы or старове´ры (Old Believers) or раско´льники (Splitters) or старообря´дцы (lit. Following the Old customs).
