Стихотворение посвящено Анне Олениной, которая однажды оговорилась, обратившись к Пушкину на «ты». В следующее воскресенье он привёз ей эти стихи. В нормативном русском языке между взрослыми принято обращение на «вы». Даже сейчас в современном употреблении на «ты» обращаются только к членам семьи, близким друзьям, возлюбленным или к Богу. В девятнадцатом веке «ты» употреблялось еще реже, и в семьях из высших сословий даже дети должны были обращаться к родителям на «вы».
This poem is dedicated to Anna Olenina who once misspoke saying ты to Pushkin, and the following Sunday he brought her the poem. In the standard Russian, вы is used as the appropriate form of address between adults. Even now, in contemporary standard usage, the more intimate ты is only reserved for very close friends, lovers, and God. In the nineteenth century it was used even more rarely, and even the children were expected to address their parents as вы.
