Although Tyutchev spent more than twenty years of his life working as a diplomat in Germany, in 1844 he returned to Russia to stay there permanently. While Tyutchev admired the achievements of Western civilization, this poem reflects his deep belief that Russia had its own path of development different from Western countries. Tyutchev was a Slavophile and a nationalist, «за´падник по о´бразу жи´зни, славянофи´л по убежде´нию» He authored several articles devoted to the subject of Russia's unique role in history. Ironically, they were all written in French.
